A teacher who kept the books
While Tony built a career in restaurants, Kathleen worked as a schoolteacher. She also did the bookkeeping that every small business depends on, the work that rarely gets noticed when it is done well.
She has been with Tony through all of it. The two met in 1971 and have been married for more than five decades. When the family’s restaurants in Texas failed in the oil bust, she packed up with Tony and the boys and moved to Southwest Florida in 1989 to start over.

She named Pinchers
When Tony was getting ready to open the first restaurant in 1997, the family spent months on names. Tony liked Key West Pinks. A designer came back with Pinchers and Crackers. Kathleen suggested Pinchers, after the blue crabs they planned to serve, and that was the one. The first restaurant opened as Pinchers Crab Shack. Read the full story of the name.
A family raised in restaurants
Tony and Kathleen raised their sons Grant and Adam around restaurant work. A booth sometimes doubled as a spot for a nap. It is part of why Pinchers has always been a place where families feel at home, with kids at the table and nobody fussing about a little mess.

Grant counts his mother’s cooking among his favorites. He has also been clear about who owns the business he now runs.
“It’s owned by my mom, my dad and me.”

Behind the scenes, by choice
Tony is the storyteller, the one greeting guests and painting signs. Kathleen has spent most of her working life behind the scenes, and in a family interview she said as much. Pinchers started with three people: Tony out front, Grant in the kitchen and Kathleen holding everything else together. Read about Tony and Grant.
