What is the Pinchers Shuffle?

The Pinchers Shuffle is a habit that guests started at the bar of the original Pinchers in Bonita Springs. Nobody planned it and nobody announced it, but the family gave it a name, and it says a lot about what kind of place Pinchers has always been.

One stool became two

There wasn’t much extra room at the first Pinchers. The restaurant was small, the tables were large, and when it got busy the bar filled up in a hurry. Then something interesting started happening. When another guest arrived looking for a seat, the people already at the bar would scoot over.

One stool became two. Two people made room for three. Somebody shifted a little closer to their neighbor, and just like that another person could join the fun.

Strangers at the big tables

The big tables worked the same way. Guests who didn’t know each other sometimes ended up sharing space, swapping stories and discovering they had more in common than they expected. Maybe you learned where the fish were biting. Maybe somebody gave you a tip about a local beach, or you met a neighbor who lived two streets away. Or maybe you just had a good laugh.

Tony Phelan loved that. He knew a memorable meal wasn’t always about what happened in the kitchen. Sometimes it was about the person sitting beside you. Tony and Grant didn’t need to manufacture a sense of community. Their guests were already creating one.

The fries guests wouldn’t give up

Guests have shaped Pinchers in other ways too. Fresh-cut fries have been on the menu since 1997, made from potatoes cut in the restaurant instead of the frozen fries many kitchens use. They take attention, because potatoes aren’t identical: some cook darker, some take longer.

So Grant Phelan once tested taking them off the menu at one restaurant. It did not go over well. As Grant tells it, it felt like the restaurant had a revolt on its hands, and some guests made it very clear they wouldn’t be back without them. The experiment ended quickly, the fresh-cut fries came back, and Grant had his answer.

A restaurant its guests helped build

Pinchers doesn’t belong only to the family that runs it. The guests have helped shape it too. So if you’ve ever moved over to make room for somebody at Pinchers, congratulations: you’ve taken part in a little piece of its history. No dance lessons required.
